Standard Equipment for a paratrooper:  The pack is visually smaller than is carried today.  But it held all we needed, which was 2 pr socks, 2 changes of fatigues, 2 shorts and 2 T shirts, and shaving gear in the pack. around the pack was shelter half, blanket and sleeping bag, about 65 lbs worth.  We stuffed in a couple of extra cans of C rations when we could.

From top was steel pot (inside was the helmet liner), back pack with harness attached to the pistol belt.  On the belt right was 1st aid pouch w/bandage and morphine, entrenching tool, M1911 45 Auto (if you carried a rifle your bayonet went here), and on the left was the water canteen w/cup, and ammo pouches.  Strap for the gas mask was around our waist under the pistol belt.

To add cold weather gear over our regular fatigues there would be a wool shirt and wool trousers, field pants, field jacket or parka and all this gear would then go over that.

The Equipment bag may carry extra ammo for the squad members, an MG, Radios, Telephones and wire, extra rations or a myriad of other items that might be useful, even toilet paper for the officers if you are on HQ staff.

This is the C-119.  My first five jumps were from this plane.  Its a bit like the bumble bee - its not supposed to fly, it does fine - except maybe it flaps a little to much on take off!
